Handstand Jam is New Mexico's only dedicated handstand and inversion class. Ninety non-heated minutes with David and Avery, the most well-rounded handstand coaches in the state, built entirely around one goal: the handstand. A real protocol built on strength, range of motion, and tempo, not random practice. Every level welcome.
We looked. Gyms around Albuquerque run kids gymnastics and the occasional beginner tumbling class, but nowhere else in New Mexico is there an hour and a half devoted to nothing but handstands and inversions for adults. Handstand Jam is it. If you want to learn to handstand in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, or anywhere in the state, this is the class built for it.
That is not a slogan. It is a real gap, and it means you get focused coaching that does not exist anywhere else nearby.
Ninety minutes built entirely around one goal, the handstand. Most gyms treat handstands as a five minute warm-up drill or an afterthought inside a bigger class. This one doesn't. Every session is a non-heated block of wrist and shoulder prep, skill drills, partner spotting, and conditioning, scaled from your very first kick-up at the wall to a freestanding balance in the middle of the floor. Mats and props are provided, so just bring yourself.
Every level, total beginners included, plus anyone who has hit a plateau practicing on their own. This is the class that gives you an actual protocol instead of random practice. You leave with a framework you can keep using outside the room, not just a sore shoulder and a few tips you will forget by next week. Most of our students are adults with no gymnastics background at all.
A handstand is one of the most complete things you can train. It builds wrist and shoulder strength, a rock-solid midline, body awareness, and the kind of fearlessness that carries into the rest of your practice and your life. It is also just fun. There is nothing like the first time you float, unassisted, and realize you are holding yourself up.
A handstand is not one skill, it is three, and every session trains all of them in order. Strength to support the position, range of motion to get into good alignment, and tempo to control the transitions in and out. Build them together and the handstand stops being a guess. New to all of this? Read our guide to learning a handstand as an adult.
Support the position. The pressing strength to hold yourself up lives in the wrists, shoulders, and a locked midline. Without it there is nothing to balance on, so we build it every session with conditioning and loaded holds.
Get into alignment. You cannot stack in a straight line if your shoulders and spine will not open to let you. We drill the mobility that lets you actually reach the position, instead of forcing a banana shape and calling it a handstand.
Control the transitions. A handstand is won and lost in the moments getting in and out. Controlled kick-ups, soft landings, and the timing that turns a wild launch into a repeatable entry. This is where a spotter changes everything.
A handstand is not strength alone. It is a stack. When your wrists, shoulders, hips, and ankles line up over one plumb line, balance costs almost nothing and you can hold it all day. When they drift out of line, you fight to stay up and burn out fast. Everything we drill points back to this one idea, and once you feel it, it clicks.
Not the strongest, not the flashiest. The most well-rounded handstand coaches in New Mexico, and the ones most likely to actually get you upside down. They teach the foundations, they spot every rep, and they have a genuine gift for meeting a nervous first-timer exactly where they are.
David co-owns SWEAT with Marisa and has spent years refining handstand training under a mentor who is grooming him to carry the method forward. A native New Mexican and a patient teacher, he has built the training system that runs every Jam. If you want someone who can break a handstand down into steps you can actually follow, this is him.
Avery is David's son and the other half of the two best handstanders in the state. A relentless, hands-on coach with an easy sense of humor, he keeps the energy loose while the standards stay high. Between father and son, no level walks in too advanced or too green to belong here.
Handstand Jam is the door in. Handstand Camp is the deep end. A small-group intensive that runs the full method over several weeks, with more reps, more personal coaching, and a real progression you can measure from week one to graduation. Built for anyone who caught the bug at a Jam and wants a freestanding handstand on a deadline.
Wrists, shoulders, and a bulletproof midline, trained together the way the body actually works.
You learn where you are in space upside down, and it sharpens everything you do right side up.
Getting comfortable inverted rewires your relationship with falling, failing, and trying again.
Few things beat the first time you float unassisted. It is play, and it is addictive.
Learn it here, take it with you. A handstand is the most portable skill there is, and our coaches practice what they teach.
